Job Purpose:

To assist in ensuring the safety, security and well-being of the residents and residential buildings by providing first line, on call cover and out of office hours emergency response to residents.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Participate in a rota providing first line out of office hours cover in University managed residential accommodation, ensuring that all procedures for handover with the Residential Service office is followed.

  2. Respond to fire alarm activation's and act as a fire marshal when necessary.

  3. Hold a set of master keys and fire alarm panel keys for which you will be responsible for at all times, whilst on duty

  4. Allow students access when they arrive out of hours or have their keys stolen or lost following correct procedures.

  5. Complete a report following each duty shift, ensuring any hazards are identified; maintenance issues for action, fire alarm incidents or resident issues/conflicts are recorded.  Follow up reporting may be required from time to time and as such Residential Assistants should be available to carry out this duty.

  6. Efficiently keep other members of staff up to date in emergency situations and record appropriately on the morning report.

  7. Assist with the promotion of REC activities and community engagement including taking part when appropriate.

  8. To provide support and information in situations where a resident may be expressing distress or uncertainty and have knowledge to refer them to relevant support services.

  9. Assist in maintaining good neighbourly relations with residents and the general public where appropriate and advise the Residential Service if there have been and complaints or disputes made when the office is closed.  

  10. Check, wherever possible, on emergency maintenance reports to determine the seriousness and urgency. Call out and liaise with facilities staff if necessary, or advise Residence Officers of issues via the daily report log.

  11. Issue equipment to residents if utilities fail.  Asset checks should be regularly maintained and updated to ensure equipment levels remain stocked.

  12. Daily interaction with students is required, whether manning the site office, carrying out kitchen visits or patrolling residential buildings.

  13. Be aware of any Fire, Health & Safety legislation and security issues, and take appropriate action, including carrying out safety checks as required.

  14. To observe the UUK code of practice and ensure that compliance is met.

  15. Attend all relevant courses and meetings.

  16. Other duties include, collecting and distribution and return of post and distribution and collection of notices around the residential buildings.

  17. Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may be reasonably required.

  • Tuesday 4.30pm to 8.30am Wednesday
  • Wednesday 4.30pm to 8.30am Thursday
  • Thursday 4.30pm to 8.30am Friday
  • Friday 4.30pm to 5pm Saturday
  • Saturday 5pm to 8.30am Monday
